For the past 16 years, Maharaja has provided an affordable yet luxurious dining experience to the people of Nedlands. Conveniently located beside the Windsor Cinema and just a short walk from the Captain Stirling pub, Maharaja has become part of the tapestry of an evening of entertainment for locals, who often choose to combine drinks, dinner, and a movie. Many locals also pick up takeaway from Maharaja to enjoy at the outdoor cinemas at UWA, or for picnics on the waterfront at Crawley, or in Kings' Park.
Gary Bassi opened Maharaja in Nedlands in 2000. Having begun his restaurant career some seven years previously, as a partner in Innaloo’s Punjab, and then striking out on his own to open the Indian Garden in Applecross in 1997, Gary knew at once when the Stirling Highway property became available that this was where he wanted to create his flagship restaurant, the Maharaja.
With themes of old-world opulence, the Maharaja specialises in the North Indian foods that were once the preserve of nobility: Butter Chicken, that decadent butter, cream, and tomato-based sauce that is so very popular today, Korma, a sauce made of crushed cashews and cream, and spinach-cream sauces, among others.
The menu at Maharaja is extensive, and each dish is cooked to perfection in the time-honoured traditions. All meats are marinated for 24 hours in the spices particular to the dish they will be used for. The fresh herbs, cream, and delicate flavourings are added at the very end. Traditional charcoal tandoor ovens are used to roast marinated meats, and to cook the variety of breads that are made after you order. Apart from the main menu, weekend specials include such delights as slow-cooked goat on the bone, and fresh green lentils done in a home-cooking style.
Maharaja’s recent renovation has transformed it into a palace of luxury: with antique-style rugs, furnishings, and mirrors; plush, roomy seats; imported German glassware, designer cutlery, and stunning wallpaper, the customer is transported into another time and place. The service and attention to detail combine to make each customer feel that they, during the hours they spend with us, are a maharaja themselves. With its spacious dining room, Maharaja can easily accommodate group bookings without losing its intimate feel.
Whether as part of a group or enjoying a romantic dinner for two, Maharaja will ensure that your needs are personally seen to and that you leave completely satisfied.
